THE ASCENT OF MAN: the Alt3 view of the world in which we live. 1st April, 2010 The world is in chaos ... but hasn't it always been this way? There is no such thing as the "good old days". There never has been any "golden era" or perfect age. Life was difficult in the past - as it is now. However, even as we live in times of great and fundamental change, the difficulties of today are very similar to the difficulties of the past. The reason for the chaos is simple - society sinks to the lowest common denominator. Those who guide society (all of us) may speak the right words about what we need to achieve ... yet so few actually reach for them. Therefore when you are on your own the struggle becomes all the more difficult and overwhelming with the result that too many are dragged down to the "lowest common denominator". What does this mean? It means we who make up society, the workers, the producers, the decision makers, the makers of our society whom so ever we may be, as we struggle forward, by and large pay only lip service to honour, respect and integrity - and we lament at their passing. We have become what we dislike the most. Governments provide the framework of society. Business provides the impetus for society. People of all types provide the reason for business and government and therefore for all society. We all have a role to play. Yet in reality, how many take responsibility for their society? Due to the main weakness of democracy too many governments are only interested in vote catching within a specified time. The short term and highly bureaucratic nature of government decisioning does not provide a suitable role model for the progression of society. Likewise, business provides the means for an increased standard of living, yet by the aging business philosophy of "maximising profit at any cost" constantly feeds the base human urges of greed and disrespectful action to feed the greed. And we, as the people of our society, avert our eyes when we see crime or fail to teach our children the very real difference between right and wrong, as a consequence of which too many young people are engulfed in drink and drugs and crime - and we lift our hands to the heavens and proclaim our innocence. We are at fault - we all are. Yes, we may lament at the lack of honour and respect and integrity yet, as the saying goes, if you think you are too small to be effective then you obviously have never been to bed with a mosquito. Indeed the world is in chaos, as it always has been, yet these are dangerous days with a number of serious burning platform issues that transcend borders, transcend cultures and generations and societies. Make no mistake, the chaos continues and will become worse because as a society, as a family of societies, we lack the required honour and respect and integrity. And as we struggle over and past our neighbours, in our greed we distrust and are suspicious - we burn flags and swear vengeance and plot through the bitterness of the chaos, adding fuel to the chaos with division breeding greater division and fragmentation so we use up fragile, finite resources running to stand still. When in the history of mankind has hatred and destruction EVER created stability and prosperity? What madness is this? At a time of great and fundamental change when we need to find unifying ground so we stand together as one beneath the sun, with honour and respect and integrity, we have disintegrating societies and no one - NO ONE - taking responsibility. National leaders ... where is your courage in the face of chaos? Business leaders ... this isn't about money - it is about sustainability. Parents and people where ever you are ... is your heart so pounded by the daily grind that you lack the caring and compassion we all need to build a worthwhile society? Treat yourself with honour and respect and integrity and you will see the world is not full of demons trying to tear you apart. Treat your friends and family and neighbours with honour and respect and integrity and you will see there is much less reason to distrust. The stability of any society is the product of the individual units of that society, as it is the product of the framework and the impetus. They all must work in harmony. Harmony creates unification. Unification creates a greater and far more fitting progression than fighting and struggling and the complete misuse of those fragile, finite resources. The enemy is not outside the borders. The enemy is within and it goes by the name of complacence and as we stand at the crossroads, within a history littered by an untold number of crossroads, make no mistake, in this time of great and fundamental change, the enemy of complacence will shatter the pillars of society - and no one will benefit. Yes, the world is in chaos ... as it always has been ... but it needn't continue to be. If we want something better then we must reach for it - governments, businesses, people, in harmony - unified. Working together. It is time to heal society. It is time to heal international relations and for national leaders to stop screaming at one another. It is time to make business more sustainable. It is time for parents to take responsibility for the future of their children – and be suitable role models. True, there will always be countries, companies, individuals who seek only to abuse. The community and society needs to be strong enough to be unified against such criminals. This strength and this unification naturally emerges from honour, respect and integrity. This is the Alt3 view of the world. It is about creating common prosperity rather than common chaos. We can achieve more ... together. This is an aspirational view … and yet … if we don’t aspire to be better and reach for that something better then indeed a great darkness will befall. Regards JS
