DISCUSSION: OBAMA - THE AUDACITY OF HOPE

The audacity of hope.

Should hope be audacious? Always.

Always we need to look beyond what is accepted. Always we need to reach further than has been. Do not believe anyone who tells you, you cannot achieve something because it hasn’t been achieved before. Look at Barack Obama.

Voices of convention may be loud. The chains of restriction may be heavy. Yet the strides forward we make are far greater than any of these. Where would be if we never did reach forward? What hope would there be for our children? It is our duty and responsibility to give hope to our children. It is our duty and responsibility to reach for that intangible something that is better.

This something better can only be achieved by embracing change. Positive change.

No one group of people have any right to see themselves as being better or more worthy in any way than any other group. No one group is right and all others are wrong. Seeing the world in terms of “them and us” is the old way of conflict politics that since the very beginning of time has squandered countless lives and valuable resources, creating degradation, thriving on ignorance. We have squabbled amongst ourselves while all around global problems that require global cohesion and action build into some of the greatest threats ever to confront humanity.

There are people who view others with deep suspicion because of their religion or because of their colour. There are people who breed hate and thrive on destruction. Some people may believe the world is harsh on them because of who or what they are. Let me tell you this – the world is harsh on us all, regardless of religion, colour, age, sex, status, location or any other factor.

Life is difficult for all of us – yet we have a common purpose. And as the global problems increase in intensity, life is about to become even more difficult – for every single one of us regardless of religion, colour, age, sex, status, location or any other factor.

We are all in this together. We have a common purpose.

For some this is reason enough to perpetuate the age-old conflicts and perceptions that have served only to cause chaos and disaster. Yet for some of us it is reason enough to be different. For some of us it is reason enough to dream of hope in all its audacity – and to reach forward for that something better to secure a common future.

We are all in this together.

We have entered into a new era. It is an era in which tough choices have to be made. Are we to perpetuate the chaos and the conflict based on ignorance and institutionalised hatred? Are we to be controlled by the cultivated fear of leaders who would stoop to any inhuman means possible to cling onto or to increase their power?

Or … are we to turn away from this and seek something better?

We have entered into a new era. It will be an era where men, women and children can achieve. It will be an era where man, women and children will be judged less on the colour of their skin, or by their age, or by their culture, or by their material wealth – and will be judged more on what they have and can achieve for the common good. We are in this new era together regardless of religion, colour, age, sex, status, location or any other factor. We stand together. Our future is together.

We are all faced with those increasing global problems. Are we to squander what scant resources we have in the endless cycle of pointless fighting that has grown to be the accepted norm? Or are we to realise we all have a valid and valuable part to play in creating that something different?

We all have skills and abilities. We all have a part of the overall jigsaw puzzle that is our global society. No one group is right and so all others are wrong. We are all in this together.

This is the new era. It is an era in which hope with all its audacity becomes tangible. It is an era in which we – together – reach forward to achieve that something better.

Do not let anyone tell you, you cannot achieve something because it has never been achieved before. Haven’t you had enough of other peoples restrictions? Be better than this. Reach for something better. Be audacious in your hope … and dare to dream.

Look at Barack Obama – there can be change we believe in.
