EXTREMISM

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke 1729-1797.

Extremism and its violent expression of terrorism is one of the gravest dangers facing the world today. This danger is ignored by many in the mistaken belief it is someone else's problem. It isn't someone else's problem. It is a problem for all of us.

The world is changing. The pace of change is increasing. Global communication can increase understanding. Yet just as easily it can be used to create barriers that may seem insurmountable. It can give rise to people who are further apart than ever before. The world may well be shrinking yet is becoming more fragmented.

This change is impacting on numerous societies, organisations, businesses, countries, regions. It is giving rise to a polarisation of opinion and outlook. Historical barriers are being enhanced, new barriers are being created by a minority with much to gain from the chaos of extremism, terrorism and conflict.

Terrorism is not godliness. Terrorism does not lead to godliness. Through death, destruction and hatred, terrorism never will create a heaven on Earth. It will never create peace. It will never be a foundation for a sustainable future regardless of religion, politics or any other polarising influence misused and abused by the minority to ensnare the majority in their activities.

This is a dangerous situation. There are those within every society who are driven towards the extremes. Most people realise another way is required. A different way to the prevailing fragmentation and the unwanted consequences. Yet the overwhelming majority of people want only peace, prosperity and a sustainable, stable growth.

This is not simply a matter of tightening the ever tight security measures. Security is expensive. Security only tackles the issue when it becomes a problem. Usually by that stage it can be too late. The extremism is evident because of the damage caused - and increasingly caused.

There have been too many avoidable social and humanitarian disasters. Too many divisions. Too many mistakes.

What drives the behaviour of barbarism?

Does barbarism and pure inhumanity have a place in the future world?

How can any future be sustainable if founded on instability?

What impact will this have on economic viability?

How does extremism affect you? Does it have valid roots? Is it based on basic untruths and intolerance? Is it contributing to social disintegration? Is it contributing to unrest and violence? Is it contributing to uncertainty? Does it have support? Is it met with disgust and disbelief? Is it centered on a particular social area or group?

What ever the answers there will be one common thread. Extremism and its violent representation can effectively destroy the economic base of a business, a country, a region. This leads to extreme long term difficulties and hardship. It will destroy sustainability.

Growth can only be achieved through internal stability. Sustainability can only be achieved through a long term strategy based on internal stability. Without this internal stability and sustainability any economic benefits will be limited - and usually not widespread throughout the population, increasing the instability.

In todays world extremism is rife. The threats are real. There will be further terrorist outrages.

Preventing these outrages, preventing the destruction, preventing the instability is not simply a matter of security. It is far more comprehensive than this. There is no doubt you will be aware of the intricate complexities of your particular situation far more than anyone else. Yet working with our advisory service to help alleviate some of the core issues may well be beneficial.

The world is fragmenting. Another way is required. A different way to the prevailing fragmentation. This is leading edge innovation.
